House Numbering in Putnam County  

Our Numbering System starts at the North-East corner of the county at Roads 1 and A, and begins with number 1000 at this location in either direction and increases 1000 numbers for each additional mile ending with 28000 on the East and West roads and ending with 22000 on North and South roads. 

Roads beginning with a number (example: 1, 12, 15-M) are primarily North and South roads. 

Roads beginning with a letter (example A, S, H-13) are primarily East and West roads. 

U.S. 224, St. Rt.’s 12, 15, 114, 189, 613, 694 and old Rt.’s 12 and 224 are primarily East and West roads. 

St. Rt.’s 65, 66, 108, 109, 115, 190, 634, 696 and Old Rt. 65 are primarily North and South roads. 

Odd numbers are located on South and East sides of thoroughfares. 

Even numbers are located on North and West sides of thoroughfares. 

• EXAMPLE: John Doe 3501 RD N: First number (3) designates location, between Roads 3 (3000) and 4 (4000). Next two numbers (50) means 50 hundreds or 1/2 mile from Road 3. Last number (1) an odd number, designates the South side of the road.

• EXAMPLE: John Doe 14258 RD 22: First two numbers (14) designates location between Roads N (14000) and O (15000). Next two numbers (25) means 25 hundreds or ¼ mile from road N and last number (8) an even number, designates the West side of the road.

The system is designed with the flexibility to permit the addition of new homes without changing your present number. 

Suggestions for Installation and

Placement of House Number Signs in

Putnam County 

 

• Sign should be placed in a highly visible position approximately 10 feet off the side of the roadway. This is so snowplows and cars will be less likely to hit them.

• Sign should be placed four feet off of the ground. This is to keep the number visible above the grass, weeds, or snow.

• Sign should be placed near the main driveway. May be mounted on mailbox post if on the same side of the road as house, to avoid confusion.

• Do not install on a power or phone pole, as the Utility company will remove them.

• Signs may be ordered for a horizontal or vertical mounting.

• Signs may be ordered in Blue if there is a pond for adequate water supply. Talk to your local Fire Dept.

• Remember, these signs are for your benefit in case of an emergency. Please use the correct number and install them properly
